Here is what our classes were up to today! We had a special Family Tefilah, where we began the tradition of celebrating all our students, teachers, and parents who have birthdays that month. It was great to see all the January birthdays!
Kindergarten
Today our focus was on Tu’Bshevat the birthday o the Trees, which is Feb.
8, 2012. We discussed the importance of trees in our lives and in Judaism. We
read The Littlest Tree by
Sylvia Pouss and made bird feeders. We had music
with Benny.
1st Grade
We continued with the Torah Story of
Joseph and his brothers. We learned that Jacob gave Joseph a beautiful
coat as a gift. Joseph did not share his coat and continually bragged about it.
His behavior made his brothers jealous and angry. The children created a
multi-colored coat to remind us to share and to be kind to others.
2nd Grade
Mrs. Rodriguez's class helped out and led the Mi Chamocha in Family Tefilah. They enjoyed singing in music and sang Hatikvah, the Israeli National anthem. Mr Levy's class learned the Hebrew letter yud. We continued learning about the 10 plaques.
3rd grade
Today in Hebrew we learned the letters ayin and kaf. Then in our Judaic Studies class we
did a debate to understand how the Knesset works. The students were divided in to different "parties" and they were all recommending different things for us to have for snack. They had to create coalitions in order to get a majority vote. The winner: double fudge brownies!
4th Grade
We spent our time in Judaic Studies discussing monotheism. There is a disagreement over
whether Abram’s knowledge of God should be considered the beginning of monotheism.
5th Grade
Today in Hebrew the 5th grade completed their study
of the V'ahavta prayer with a quiz. Although we are finished with the prayer in
this class, the students are not finished learning it! We also
started the study of Mi Chamocha, the prayer our Israelite ancestors said in
praise of God after they miraculously crossed the Sea of Reeds and escaped
the Pharaoh's army. Our next holiday is Tu B'shevat, the Jewish New
Year for the Trees. We will be celebrating Tu B'shevat on
Wednesday, February 8th, the actual date of the holiday with a special seder,
tasting fruits and nuts etc... Please sign up to bring an item to share with
the class. The sign up sheet will be on the bulletin board outside of room 3.
6th grade
Today we had a family
program focused on the Bar or Bat Mitzvah process and how it is a way of connecting with God. We spoke about inclusion and exclusion during this life cycle event, as well as how it is an opportunity to help the community through the service project.
