It was wonderful having so many families here for the 2nd grade family program! Be sure to check out the photos! We also loved coming together to celebrate all of our February birthdays! Here is what was happening in all of our other classes:
Kindergarten
Empathy was the focus
of our lesson today. We learned that when we can empathize with another person's feelings, we can better figure out how to be helpful (to treat them as we would
like to be treated). We learned about Rebecca and her kindness towards
Eliezer. We also read Bone Button Borscht by Audrey Davis, which speaks to the
Jewish value of feeding the hungry, ma’akhil re’evim.
1st Grade
We learned that Joseph
became a very rich and powerful man in Egypt. His brothers came to Egypt
looking for food. They told Joseph how sorry they were for what they had done
to
him. He forgave them. Jacob came to Eygpt too and the family lived in peace. We made a picture of a heart, representing our love for our family. Just like Esav and Jacob made up, Joseph and his brothers recognized the importance of family.

3rd Grade
Today in Hebrew we
learned het and we raced against each other to read Hebrew words. In Judaic Studies we
learned about the biblical personality Joshua and the Jordan river
4th Grade
In Judaic Studies we reviewed
the covenant between God & Abraham. We discussed the laws of kashrut and why
they were not practiced in the time of Abraham when he welcomed the guest into
his tent. In Hebrew, we
worked on the English meaning of V’ahavta reading line-by-line. We played a game
with the Alef Bet Quest words. We added "What's your name" in Hebrew to our
Hebrew conversation.
5th Grade
Today in class we started
our new unit: Emunah (faith). We started the class with the Debbie Friedman song, L'chi
Lach. Then, we spoke about different times through the Tanakh that Jewish
figures follow God's instructions. Finally, we debated whether or not we would
get up and go to the place that God showed us. The Hebrew class had a wonderful, delicious, and fun Tu B'shevat seder
last Wednesday thanks to EVERYONE for sharing a food item. All the
students participated in leading the seder, tasting a large variety of fresh
and dried fruits, and drinking four different cups of juice from white to dark
red. Today the class completed their study of Mi Chamocha and led a mini
tefillah in our room. We are just starting the main section of the prayer
service, known as the Tefillah, or Amidah.
Today we had another session in our Jewish Lens program. We
analyzed Jewish pictures and discussed the rationale and values behind each
picture.
