What happened at Temple Judea today! 2/5/12

Kindergarten
Today our focus was on the holiday of Tu B’Shevat, which is considered the birthday of the trees. We discussed the importances of trees and the need to preserve nature. We read the story Honi’s Circle of threes by Phillis Gersgaler and thought about how Honi demonstrated our “love your neighbor as yourself” theme. We also made tree pictures with oil pastels and decorated sugar cookies with green and brown m&m trees! Tu B’Shevat is Wednesday Febuary 8th.
1st Grade
Tu B’shevat is coming and the children learned about the importance of trees. We also learned that birds and trees have a special relationship. We made biodegradable bird feeders for the kids to take home. This activity reinforces the values of bal taschit – caring for the environment and tzar baalei chaim – showing kidness to animals.
2nd grade
Today we read words in Hebrew. We enjoyed fruit for snack & planted plants fot Tu B’Shevat.
We decorated our kippot & played on the playground.
3rd grade
Today in Hebrew we learned yod and our last vowel. In Judaic Studies we learned about Yad VaShem, which is the Holocaust museum in Israel. We were surprised by how interested many of the students were in this museum! This concluded our studies of Jerusalem
4th grade
In Judaic Studies we continued reading and discussing the importance of the covenant between God & Abram. The Devar HaYom (word of the day) was AMEN. In Hebrew
we worked on learning the meaning of the V’ahavta words as well as reading and chanting it. We did a word search with Hebrew words that have tricky parts in them. Our morning finished singing with Benny.
5th grade
Today we talked about the symbols of Shabbat - as a way of studying about the Jewish value of Zikaron or memory. We are commanded to remember the Sabbath and the symbols and rituals help us do that. In groups we created commercials advertising the Shabbat symbols.
6th Grade
Today we worked on questions about the city of Jerusaelm. We started learning about the four different quarters of the Old City of Jerusalem.
