January 8th - Our First Sunday in 2012!

We were excited to see our K-3 students for the first time in 2012! Please note that there is no religious school on January 15. We’ll see you on January 22!

Kindergarten

Happy 2012! Welcome Back! I hope everyone had a great winter break. Today our focus was on the Synagogue and the Jewish Symbols in the sanctuary. We took a walk around the Synagogue which included the library, kitchen, gift shop, lobby the temple offices and the Sanctuary. We worked on a map of the synagogue and school and even tried to build the ark out of LEGO.

2nd Grade

We began the new year by learning a new vowel! We’re proud of our students’ Hebrew progress.

3rd grade

Today in Hebrew we reviewed all the letters and vowels we have learned and added a new letter, the tet. We reviewed the old city of Jerusalem and talked about the Six-Day War. We also learned about one of the holiest sites in Jerusalem—the Kotel (Western Wall).

4th Grade

Our Devar Hayom was about generations. We discussed geneology, looking at Abraham as an example of how the Torah teaches us about new beginnings.

5th Grade

Today the Hebrew class practiced reading the V'ahavta prayer in small groups, with students helping each other. For our last period, both classes came together to do Sedra Scenes--skits about the Torah. We will continue with these skits on Wednesday.

6th Grade

Today we worked on questions for our classmates about “New Jerusalem” and the Israeli government. We also participated in the Jewish Lens program.

January 4th - Welcome Back!

It was great to see our 4th-6th grade students!

4th Grade

Students read the Tower of Babel story and each child created a midrash to provide his or her insight into why the people built the tower as well as explaining the significance of God’s punishment. In Hebrew students learned fay and final fay. The class reviewed key words and played a reading game with the new letter. We continued our study of the V’ahavta, chanting it from a text for the 1st time.

5th Grade

Welcome back to Hebrew school! The 5th grade received their Behrman House test pilot wings for being one of the first classes to test out the Hebrew online materials. We will help you do this if you aren't sure how to sign up. Today was a review of key concepts--Hebrew roots, and the prayers from the first half of the year. Students thought about a New Year's resolution for Hebrew and will try to attain it in the next five months. We started to learn about the meaning of the V'ahavta and the students read from a real mezuzah parchment--the Shema and the V'ahavta.

6th Grade

Today in 6th grade students started learning about the Israeli parliament, the Knesset. We read about it in our book and students answered questions to make sure they understood what they were reading. We will continue learning about the Knesset on Sunday!
