First Sunday - Temple Judea was jumping!!

It was so exciting to welcome back all of our K-3rd grade students - and welcome so many new students to our religious school program! It was truly inspiring to look around the sanctuary during Family Tefilah and see that the place was STANDING ROOM ONLY!!! We hope this is a trend we can continue!
All K-6 students, led by Ali Gates, JTY Social Action Vice President, and Youth Director Sharon Israel, assembled over 1,000 emergency care kits that will be delivered to the homeless in Miami through the Lotus House Shelter, Camillus House, and the Miami Coalition for the Homeless. What a great way to start the year!
Wondering what the kids were doing all day? Look at these summary statements from this morning's classes!
Kindergarten: The focus of today's lesson was introducing children
to their new classmates in order to build our classroom community. Well we definitely did this! It was great to see everybody (including many friends from Temple Judea's preschool)! We read the book "No Rules for Michael" and learned that having rules helps everyone be respectful to each other. We also learned the Hebrew words Kavod (honor or respect) and B'rit (covenant, set of promises). Finally we created and signed a class b'rit for showing kavod to each other. Next week our focus will be Rosh Hashanah and specifically the ceremony of Tashlich - the casting off of our bad behaviors so that we can focus on the good things we can do!

First Grade: What a fantastic first day of Sunday school! We discussed what the goals of our class will be. Each student wrote the key concepts we will be learning - and drew a representation of each one. For Torah, some students drew pictures of the torah and others drew pictures of stories from the Torah. For Avodah (sacred acts) students cut out a ritual object - there were chanukiyot for Chanukah and apples and honey for Rosh Hashanah. For the third piece, Gmilut Chasadim, we participated in the mitzvah project in the social hall. The day came to a close in the sanctuary with Rabbi Goldberg, Rabbi Siegal and Benny leading us in a special 9/11 Family Tefilah.
Second Grade: The students were busy this morning. In Mr Levy's class. They participated in the service project for the homeless, introduced the textbooks and themes for the year, and spoke about what a good year this will be. In Mrs. Rodriguez's class, they had fun getting to know each other with a relay race, enjoyed apples and honey, and learned the blessing for fruit!
Third Grade: Today the third grade applied for our passports at the Israeli airport as we started our study of Israel. We also did a diagnostic worksheet of Hebrew letters and vowels that will help us shape our Hebrew study this year.
Fourth Grade (Hebrew): We played a reading game with the letters shin, mem, and final mem and used the new words in simple sentences. We began to read and complete Lesson 1 in Aleph Bet Quest as well as counting from 1 to 7 in Hebrew!
(Judaic Studies): We played "I Spy" identifying the month of Elul and Holy Days on the Hebrew calendar. We discussed the themes of renewal and return and how Elul is the month of preparation for the High Holy Days.
Fifth Grade (Hebrew): 5th grade explored the Barechu by playing Barechu Bingo - a way of reviewing Hebrew decoding and the Barechu prayer. I hope to see all of our parents next week at the Parent Open House. Be sure to check out the blog for our class at 5thgradehebrewTJ.blogspot.com.
(Judaic Studies): Today in class we started to discuss the Five Books of Moses (also known as the Torah). We talked about some of the reasons certain stories are grouped together as well as the importance of starting a story at the beginning. We also worked on getting to know each other by interviewing each other and learning how we are like a Torah! We had a wonderful first Sunday!
Sixth Grade: Today in 6th grade, we first participated in a social action program where we made bags for homeless people in the Miami area. In Hebrew, we reviewed Torah prayers. We went around the room reading individually and as a group. In Judaic Studies, we learned about World War I and made a word splash. This information is setting us up to discuss some of the historic events that happened right before the creation of the State of Israel.
