Religious School Celebrates Chanukah!

In Miss Mikki’s Kindergarten class children made Chanukah collages and put finishing touches on their dreidels. Then students celebrated with a Hanukkah party. The day closed with a special Chanukah themed family Tefilah.

Mrs. Waldman’s Fourth Grade Judaic Studies class discussed the importance of a name. Students studied the generations before Noah and got many opinions from one another on the possibility of the longevity of those generations. The name "Noah" means comfort. The children researched the meaning of their Hebrew names and shared the meanings with the class.

Mrs. Bulbin’s Fouth Grade Hebrew class finished their Chanukah booklet filled with puzzles, word searches, matching, and songs. Students played a game reading Hebrew vocabulary on the bulletin board. At the end of class fourth grade had a party where they played Chanukah bingo and dreidel.

On Sunday Sarah’s Fifth Grade Judaic Studies class continued their discussion of courage by debating the bravest biblical figures. Out of Rachel, Abraham, Moses, Esther, Boaz, and David, the students voted Moses as the bravest biblical figure because he had to stand up to his brother to lead the Jewish people out of Egypt.

Mrs. Goldberg’s Fifth Grade Hebrew class worked on Chapter Seven (the Chanukah chapter) in their book. The students also got to see a dreidel with a “pey” instead of a “shin.” Ask your child why different dreidels have different Hebrew letters on them.

Fifth Grade also enjoyed a Chanukah party! Check out the photos below and see how much fun we had celebrating with our friends and teachers...

Shoshana's Sixth Grade Judaic Studies class played Chanukah Jeopardy with students from fifth grade. Everyone had an awesome time!

Thank you to all the parents who helped make our classroom Chanukah parties special by bringing in Latkes, Jelly Doughnuts, and other delicious Chanukah goodies. We couldn't have done it without you!

Here's what you missed: Chanukah Edition!

Miss Mikki’s Kindergarten class started their day by reading "Maccabee: The Story of Hanukkah" by Hilda Balsley. Students spoke about the book’s refrain: "Sometimes it only takes a few, who know what's right, and do it too." Afterwards the class had fun painting dreidels, making Hanukkah cards and Hanukkah decorations.

The First Grade went on a field trip to Miami Beach for their Family Program on Sunday. Children and parents alike had a wonderful time!

Mrs. Rodriguez’s Second Grade class learned about Lashon Ha-Ra (an evil tongue) and how words can wound.  Students discussed how the Torah teaches us not to gossip and why. During Family Tefillah everyone enjoyed a rockin’ concert with Josh Nelson!

In Third Grade students learned new verbs like lesovev (to spin) as well as the word sivivon (dreidel). Then, students practiced forming phrases using their new vocabulary. The class also sang Chanukah songs and learned more Chanukah vocabulary words like levivah (latke) and sufganiah (jelly doughnut). Chag Urim Sameach Lechulam! Happy Festival of Lights from all of the children, parents and third grade teachers.

In Mrs. Bulbin’s Fourth Grade class students played a reading game with their vet and vov words. Fourth graders tested each other on singing the Chanukah blessings. Children also completed a page in their Chanukah booklet on identifying terms in Hebrew.

Mrs.Goldberg’s Fifth Grade Hebrew class delved deeper into their study of Chanukah. The class learned the words light, to light, Chanukah menorah, sing, blessing, presents, candles, latkes and helper. The class also learned the  phrase 'a great miracle happened there.' Students practiced singing the blessings and read a play about Chanukah.

Sarah’s Fifth Grade Judaic Studies class started a new unit dedicated to Ometz Lev – or courage in Hebrew. Students read the story of “David and Goliath” and made advertising slogans and symbols to better promote the story’s message.

We're looking forward to seeing everyone next Sunday, December 16th for all our classroom Chanukah parties. Thank you in advance to those who've volunteered to bring in food, drinks, plasticware, etc.

Happy Chanukah from your Temple Judea Religious School Community :)

Here's what you missed: Sunday, December 2nd

Chanukkah is almost here!

Miss Mikki's Kindergarten class practiced songs for their consecration ceremony with Benny. They also read a new TJ Library book called “A Horse for Chanukkah.” Finally, students made beautiful dreidels and Hanukiyot pictures using oil pastels and liquid watercolors.

Mrs. Rodriguez's Second Grade played Mazoret and practiced Hebrew vowels. Students followed Moses on his journey leading the Israelites. The children also sang and clapped during Tefilah.

In Third Grade students moved forward learning new vocabulary during Hebrew Through Movement. Students learned parts of the body – head (rosh), hands (yadaim), feet (raglayim), and beten (tummy).

Mrs. Waldman’s Fourth Grade class read the narrative of "Cain and Abel" and approached several provocative questions. The soferim (scribes) wrote the comments on the board. Students love the opportunity to write on the board!

Mrs. Bulbin’s Fourth Grade class reviewed the story of Chanukkah highlighting Hebrew terms. Students started learning how to sing and translate the Chanukkah blessings. Fourth graders also did a reading game with words with the letters tav and tet. Finally, students watched a demonstration of the parts of the tallit.

Mrs. Goldberg’s Fifth Grade Hebrew class played bingo to review vocabulary and to learn the Chanukkah prayers.

Sarah’s Fifth Grade Hebrew class reviewed the Avot V’Imahot and studied the story of Chanukkah using Hebrew vocabulary words. Students also played “Around the Word” to practice reading their Chanukkah terms.
Sarah’s Fifth Grade Judaic Studies class chose their favorite quotes from the Bible that focus on justice. Using these quotes, students created skits to demonstrate how they can act with justice in their day-to-day lives.

In Shoshana’s Sixth Grade Judaic Studies class students played Jeopardy. The kids loved showing off how much they've learned!

In Maya’s Sixth Grade Hebrew class students played a vocabulary game in which they searched for words with particular letters or vowels. They also completed an activity about things one should think about before going into worship services.

We're looking forward to seeing everyone this December 7-9th for the Kalish Artist-in-Residence Weekend featuring Josh Nelson!
